Copycat: first Impressions

Copycat demo cover

Copycat is an enthralling narrative-driven adventure that immediately captivated us upon viewing its initial trailer. This remarkable creation is the brainchild of a dynamic duo: Samantha, the talented writer, and Kostia, the visionary art director.

Together, they form Spoonful of Wonder, a game development team established in 2022 in Sydney. Their ultimate goal is to craft immersive gaming experiences that resonate deeply with players’ innermost beings. Without divulging too much, I must confess that this demo confirms that they are on the right track.

Copycat will be available on PC via Steam, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch. Although the release is scheduled for the first quarter of 2024, the exact date has not been confirmed yet. Let’s now delve into our thoughts and feelings about this demo.

Life Through a Cat’s Eyes

This game caught our attention right from the first trailer we watched. The plot revolves around a shelter cat who gets adopted but then becomes a target of an evil scheme by another cat, the Copycat, who takes over the protagonist’s new home. While this provides a general overview of the plot, the demo only offers a glimpse into the story’s inception – the moment when Dawn first encounters her human companion.

Copycat explores significant themes, but from a unique viewpoint: that of a cat. By switching between first- and third-person perspectives, we can fully engage in the cat’s world, experiencing a life of curiosity, and longing for freedom. Along with intense emotions like the fear of trusting humans again, loneliness, and the desire to belong. In Copycat, Olive, our human companion, is an elderly woman burdened by illness and the challenges of aging, as well as the weight of loneliness. Can her newfound feline friend help her rediscover hope?

The demo was short-lived, but it reignited our interest in this game. We were particularly impressed by the choices that let us understand Dawn’s emotions and decide whether to be cautious or open-hearted. This demo shows great potential for Copycat, and we can’t wait to play the complete version. We suggest keeping an eye on its progress for anyone who loves pets or enjoys an engaging story.
