Murder Is Game Over: Murder Otaku, review

Murder Is Game Over Murder Otaku review

A new episode has been added to the Murder Is Game Over series. As with previous episodes, this one, Murder Is Game Over: Murder Otaku, is aimed at fans of the series, but it can also be enjoyed by those who are new to HitherYon Games’ games.

A new case to solve!

Having enjoyed the previous chapters, we’re back again to take on the roles of Detective Guy and Cleo, who has an infallible sense of smell. The entire Murder Is Game Over series has fairly consistent basic gameplay.

MIGO Murder Otaku 1

As investigators, our task is to solve a mysterious murder, which often involves supernatural elements. Like an episode of Scooby-Doo, our goal is to debunk the supernatural and catch the killer.

In this episode, we investigate the sudden death of Rena Ishida, a famous J-Pop singer and star of the YokaiKon convention.

Who is behind the murder? An evil spirit or one of the eight suspects?

The hotel doors close and the investigation begins.

We must question the eight suspects, gather evidence and use it to understand their alibis and true intentions.

Alongside the core investigative process, there will also be enjoyable extras such as an optional mini-game and a treasure hunt.

The questioning begins

Murder is Game Over: Murder Otaku presents us with a new mystery to solve. All eight of our suspects are involved in the case in some way; their connection to the victim and their interests mean that they are all under suspicion.

This means that we must examine all the evidence, including the less obvious clues, to solve this mystery.

The plot of Murder Is Game Over: Murder Otaku is well thought out, with well-characterised suspects. This encourages us to investigate in order to solve the murder.

The adventure lasts about 2.5 hours, and there is less to explore than in the previous chapter, ‘The Blackinton Curse‘. Despite its short duration, the mystery remains engaging.

An interesting new feature is the improvement to the mystery resolution phase. Before Detective Guy reveals the culprit, we have the option of guessing their name (if we guess correctly, we earn an achievement). We also play an active role in resolving the case itself, as we are asked to identify the evidence and motives of the suspects.

MIGO Murder Otaku 2

Over the years, the Murder is Game Over series has grown to include new chapters, each one more intriguing than the last. In this latest chapter, we enjoyed an enhanced case-solving system and an immersive storyline. It was very satisfying to solve the mystery and discover the culprit’s identity (even before Detective Guy’s explanation).

We can’t wait to see what happens next!

Our verdict

This new chapter offers simple gameplay, a well-developed case to solve and even more engagement. It is recommended for both fans of the series and newcomers alike.

  •  Connection with other chapters
  •  More engaging mystery resolution
  •  Soundtrack a bit repetitive
