Devils hideout review cover

Devil’s Hideout is a point-and-click horror game developed and published by Cosmic Void, an indie developer and author of other titles in the graphic adventure genre, including the text parser Tachyon Dreams Anthology. The game is available on Steam since 10 September 2024.

Devil’s Hideout: A sinister cult

The setting of this new point-and-click adventure takes us to a sinister city, and our story begins in an abandoned hospital. In Devil’s Hideout, we play as a young woman named Lauren who is desperately searching for her sister Beth.

Lauren learns that her sister Beth is still alive, though trapped in a limbo between the real world and the darkness. Determined to find her sister, Lauren clings to hope by embarking on a horrific adventure.

Devil’s Hideout is a narrative-based point-and-click game. In this title we have to collect objects, solve puzzles and also play some mini-games.

While Devil’s Hideout follows the style of an old-school point-and-click game, it also introduces elements of modern adventure games, such as the presence of hotspots.

The common thread throughout the adventure is finding Beth. This goal acts as the glue for both the plot and the puzzles. In fact, each puzzle we face is like a sub-quest that brings us closer to the ultimate goal.

Each time it will be necessary to collect certain items or perform certain actions in order to continue the plot. The items we find are almost always immediately useful, and there are no useless items to distract the player.

Despite this, the puzzles are not very simple and require attention to the environment and dialogue. The difficulty of the puzzles is well-balanced and the fact that you do not get stuck makes the story flow very smoothly.

With Devil’s Hideout, developer Cosmic Void shows that Kickstarter investors’ expectations were met by creating a well-made adventure.

The game features good English voice acting, with a good interpretation and variety of voices. It also shows an excellent use of pixel art graphics, which fit in well with the horror setting.

The decision to develop the game in the first person has reduced the animations to a minimum. Although there are only a few, they maintain a level appropriate to the genre.

We finished Devil’s Hideout in 2.6 hours and would have liked it to be longer.

Our verdict

A short but intense point-and-click. It gave us some jumpscares and kept us busy with a good dose of puzzles to solve in a horrific but not overly terrifying context.

  • Setting that matches the plot
  • Interesting puzzles
  • Short
