Preserve is a relaxing puzzle game developed by Bitmap Galaxy and published by Grindstone. The title is available in Early Access on Steam from 8 August 2024.
Preserve is a title where we can create real ecosystems through the placement of cards on the game board. The game has two modes, the Classic mode and the Puzzle mode.
When we start playing, we can choose between different biomes (continental, savannah, marine). For each biome, we can choose if we want to play in Classic mode or if we want to play in Puzzle mode.
In Classic mode, we start with a piece of land that we must improve to make it characteristic of the biome. There are several cards which help us improve the fields and cards with animals.
Each card to be placed has its own requirements. For example, the forest card must be placed on high and medium green lands. As soon as the forest card is placed on a tile, a forest will grow on that tile, which will be able to house the appropriate animals.
As we improve our environment, we gain harmony points. When we reach a certain number of points, we will unlock new lands and new cards to continue our ecological puzzle. At a certain score, the level is completed and we can choose to exit or continue improving our ecosystem.
The Puzzle mode, on the other hand, does not unlock any new lands or cards, instead trying to get the best placement with what we have.
Preserve: A pleasant distraction
Preserve is not the first game to use the puzzle and environment paradigm. Other similar games are Growth, which we also reviewed, and Terra Nil. Each of these games has its own differences and its own qualities. The similarity to Growth is striking. However, Preserve stands out because of its much higher quality and clean graphics.
Preserve has a very good graphic quality in the illustrations, which look like they were drawn by hand, and a good rendering of the 3D models. In addition, the game is very colourful, which means that with a little bit of effort you can create some heavenly landscapes.
The Creative mode is very interesting and functional. It allows us to create incredible environments without any limitations. These are environments that can then be immortalized thanks to the Photo mode.
